Dave Bidini

Dave Bidini of the Rheostatics on their last tour out west near the end of 2005. Shot at the Queens in Nanaimo, it was also at the same time that I was reading Dave’s book The Best Game You Can Name. I had never seen the Queens packed out with so many people. In the short time I was there, I saw some great shows: Tricky Woo, The Old Soul, Matthew Barber, C’mon and Cuff the Duke. Often at times with only a dozen people in the place and a bottle of Lucky beer. My regret is not lugging the camera and the Ilford 3200 to every show, but I did get a chance to tell Mr. Bidini how much I enjoyed his book.

While we’re at it, why not a photo of the Rheostatics’ Martin Tielli and his AY Jackson inspired double-neck guitar!

Snow Patrol

Anyone remember the Virgin Megastore? Next to Oscar’s, they had one of the best selections of graphic books in the city. Going in there took me back to the many times I would visit their Oxford Street location in London. I would imagine I just stepped off the plane and was browsing for that Death in Vegas single with Liam Gallagher, or picking up QOTSA’s Go With the Flow on clear vinyl. Vancouver’s Virgin Megastore had the odd in-store appearance and this was the only one that I managed to watch – Snow Patrol circa 2004, shot on good old Ilford 3200. Obviously Virgin left town shortly after and was quickly replaced with the HMV banner, but I’m sure that won’t be around much longer. But does anybody remember walking the hallways of this building when it was the main branch of the Vancouver Public Library? Even my current library card has 750 Burrard Street on it.
